In September of 2003  I came across an item that was going to be sold thru mainstream retail outlets  that had heavy BDSM overtones.  I thought my Kink community friends would get a kick out of knowing about  it. I did a little write up on the item, sent it out and didn't put much more thought into it. I figured it was a fluke. A little while later another item, again heavy on the BDSM connotations, was headed to local, vanilla, retailers. I sent another write up...then another, and another . soon I it evolved into a column that was going out pretty regularly

I always thought that I would quickly run out of items to report on and that would be the end of  "BDSM in the Mainstreem Media" . Much to my surprise, the opposite occurred. At any time I'd  have a surplus of  topics  waiting for me to find time in my busy schedule to write about.

Eventually there was simply too many examples of kink appearing in the mainstream to keep up with. Looking back over 3 years  of work, I saw just how much the public's perception and acceptance of BDSM had changed in such a short time. I came to the realization that what I was reporting on was no longer special or unique. Kinky culture was  out of the closet  It had just become another part of everyday life. 

I moved on to other projects.

I still think there is a lot of value in documenting instances of BDSM in the mainstream. Most Kinksters have no idea of how pervasive BDSM imagery is throughout American culture and how much of their own kinks might have been influenced by the work of those who came before. Kink culture also has a much richer history than most are aware of.

To this end, in addition to maintaining this archive, I've taken on a much larger project; to trace the history of kink in commercial (non-pornographic) media. It's a big project and it may be years till it sees the light of day. To those who miss the odd juxtapositions created when commerce and kink collide, keep an eye on my blog. I still post links that catch my eye from time to time.

thought provoking cinema or explotation of the bdsm lifestyle?....

"The Pet" http://www.thepetmovie.com/ (movie trailer is NSFW btw) From- http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/180874525 2/details "The Pet follows a young woman who, in an emotional and financial crisis, succumbs to the charm of an aristocratic benefactor. Their relationship develops from her desire to be loved and cared for and his desire to overcome the loss of his beloved setter, a loyal and devoted pet. She agrees for a considerable sum of money to become his human pet, to sleep in a cage, never wear clothes, and to be led on a leash for a period of six-months. His desire to showcase his beautiful new pet and to have her market value appraised prompts him to place her on the GSM or the Global Slave Market. His arrogance and wealth together are no match for the power and ruthlessness of 21st century slave traders." I'll withhold judgment until I can see the actual movie but just watching the trailer and listening to the director and actors talk about the movie put up a few red flags. Is this movie actually about human petplay/BDSM, or is the kink just a cover for another re-tread of the classic "white slave trade" exploitation movie. Watching the interview clips, none of the actors seem familiar with the BDSM lifestyle. The director talks at length about the negative aspects of "slavery" and has nothing positive to say about the BDSM community in his speech. He alludes to all sorts of hidden dangers in consensual slavery and makes it sound like he's uncovered some huge evil conspiracy. The director doesn’t even make a distinction in his speech between, white slavery, the objectification of women in hip-hop, serving in the military, and consensual bdsm style slavery, leading one to think that, to him, they're all the same. You’d think that if the director actually spent 5 years researching “consensual slavery,” as the movie’s myspace page claims, he’d be able to tell the difference. But the movie DOES feature lots of women naked and in collars and cages being treated like animals, strung up by their ankles and branded. That’s at least worth a rental :)

almost slipped thru the cracks

Psychopathia Sexualis -the movie! http://www.kino.com/psychopathia/in dex.html when I saw a small blurb in the paper on this movie adapting the historic work "Psychopathia Sexualis" from the 1800's I had to wonder how it actually managed to completely fly in under my radar. For a while you couldnt get away from "the Notorious Betty Page" and Kinky Boots", both small releases, in conversation among kinksters and heres a movie with just as intresting a premise, perhaps more, that seems to have eluded us all. it has a limited run at the Gene Siskel Film Center ( www.silkelfilmcenter.org ) thru thursday the 15th movie recap- Impressions from Psychopathia Sexualis (the movie) It is worth seeing... .... But .... .....It’s also not a date movie! The movie comes across as an interesting mashup of "the history channel" and a art film, with a few touches that would be right at home in a horror movie . Its low budget is very evident but it's still well put together. The good stuff, like s+m and vampirism, are early on in the film and a lot of fun to watch. The end focuses on things that, while scandalous at the time, are commonly accepted now. These elements, while handled well, don't match the sensationalism of the previous segments and as a result the film lacks a grand finale. If your go expecting to see fetish models in Victorian drag your going to be disappointed. Plastic "Hollywood" types were eschewed in favor of actors that might more accurately reflect the personages they portray. A touch that I appreciated and think adds to the film. I recommend the film but it's not a popcorn movie. Go in expecting to typical Hollywood fare your going to be disappointed. This film is more of an educational experience.

Pussycat Dolls shelved...

I saw the following news story on tv last night- "Hasbro Inc. shelved plans Wednesday to release a line of dolls based on the Pussycat Dolls, an all-female music group known for risqué lyrics and skimpy outfits. Hasbro, the nation's second biggest toy maker, said it decided the dolls were "inappropriate" for the company to market and that the pop group catered to a more mature audience. The move comes amid criticism from a national advocacy group, Dads & Daughters, that had campaigned against the doll line." from- http://articles.news.aol.com/news/artic le.adp?id=20060524201809990020&ncid=NWS00010000000001 Judging by the pic these figures wouldn't have been any more risqué than current doll lines out there. The group has steadily been toning down it's image as it transitioned itself from a Burlesque troupe to a pop group. Now, while it may seem that ex-burlesque dancers may be a bad choice for toys, keep in mind that dolls of Brittany Spears dressed as a catholic schoolgirl and in a red PCV bodysuit were released a few years ago with little criticism. Since the group abandoned burlesque and went mainstream, I don't really care if they have a toy line or not. Still- It does irk me that sources like the Christian Science Monitor are claiming this as a "major victory" - http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0526/p01s 04-ussc.html What these “child advocacy” groups fail to realize is that toys today appeal to so many more age ranges than just 6 year olds. Many toy companies have capitalized on this and devote entire toy lines to a more mature market of collectors. Even Barbie has lingerie-clad line intended solely for adults. Hasbro’s website has it’s own “grown-ups” category but, for now, theirs nothing on there actually intended for mature collectors. Hasbro has become one of the largest toy manufacturer’s in the world by consistently buying smaller toy companies to add their brands to the Hasbro portfolio. As the toy industry shrinks to just a few major players, the big boys need to remember the diversity of ages and interests of their customers. Pussycat Dolls Dolls might not necessarily appeal to small children but there would have been a market for them none the less.

For the last few weeks, when I’m on my way to the train, I’ve walked by a poster for the new X-men movie. BDSM  in mainstreem media:  News report "There are an estimated 25,000 Goreans worldwide..."

....Man, they must have a great dental plan! So, yesterday I have a random conversation with a friend about John Norman's "Gor" books, Today they make the news- http://www.guardian.co.uk/britain/artic le/0,,1778620,00.html and http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4996 410.stm I'm sure the headline "Officers discover sex-slave cult" sold a lot of papers. Reading the articles I have to question why this made the news at all. as per the article- "a police spokesman said upon arriving at the premises they did not find any evidence of "criminal offences"." and "When police called at the house they found those participating in domination practices were doing so willingly, and dropped the case." but hey! screw people's right to privacy, there's newspapers to sell! I think labeling these people as a "cult" may be a bit out of line as well. for anybody unfamilar with "Goreans", I could try to explain the phenomena but that's what Wikipedia is for- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorean I guess if there's actually 25,000 Goreans, as the articles claim, they couldnt stay a secret forever. I mean, they hid themselves so well- Google only has 54,400,000 hits for the word "Gor"! the books were in print for over 20 years. There were even 2 (real crappy) Gor movies. 25,000 goreans, wow! and all thanks to the internet! an entire quasi medival society that wouldn't exist if it weren't for computers! maybe they can give the scientologists a run for their money. grrr, now I want my own cult of sex-slaves.

Imagine walking into your local department store and buying a scantily clad slave girl (or 2, 3 4…) of your very own! In 2005 this dream became a reality. Granted, the slaves in question were 6 inches tall and made of plastic but still…. 2005 saw not one but 2 firsts in the toy industry. On an amusing note, the breasts of the figure are made of a more rubbery plastic than the rest of the figures body... That’s right, you can actually squeeze her tits if your so inclined. Sunday I went to see V for Vendetta. A movie that asks you to examine the politics that rule your life and the freedoms, or lack thereof, you may take for granted. In addition there is a lot of things currently being undertaken by our government to limit or suppress our sexual freedom as well as our right to sexual free speech. this is a little story from the washington post that probally wont make the nightly news outlets but should- "Policing Porn Is Not Part of Job Description" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ntent/article/2006/02/16/AR2006021602066.h tml in short, two members of the department of homeland security walk into a library and announce "The viewing of Internet pornography was forbidden." then they start harassing a guy over what he had on his video screen. A librarian, and then the police, had to intervene and eventually the two "homeland security" men were the only ones who had to leave. to quote-"Montgomery County's Homeland Security Department is not responsible for enforcing obscenity laws." They have since been reassigned to another area of the department. I dont have time to editorialize. besides plenty of bloggers such as Lenoard Pitts- http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20 060222/1017769.asp - are able to do so much more eloquently than I. I will say that I am disgusted by the abuse of authority, real or imagined, that took place in this incident. this is a sad reminder that there is a real war going on. Not the war in iraq, not the war on terror, but a quiet war against our own freedom. while the connection was not made in the article the federal goverment is currently waging a unecessary "war on obsenity." a war that is really nothing more than federal permission to erode the rights of it's citizens. please pass this news story on. it may seem minor but it something people should know about thanks to vvalkyri for bringing this to my attention

nude comic cover controversy

We all know “Conan the Barbarian”, right? Even if we've never read a Conan book or watched the movie the character, like Superman, is such a part of our pulp culture landscape that you would be hard pressed to find an adult who hasn't had some sort of exposure to the property, no matter how peripheral. He’s become part of our everyday lexicon, sanitized and safe for consumption by the general public…. What’s interesting about Conan is, unlike superman, how people forget that his exploits really are intended for adult audiences. The books are violent and sexually charged. They often feature bondage, domination and torture. The movie had all of these elements and nudity as well (something that could only be described in the books). So you would think that when these elements show up in current Conan comic books it should have been expected? They are, after all, just illustrations of activities that have been floating around in print for decades. There’s no reason for people to complain or feign outrage…. The (variant) cover of the new Conan comic , issue #24, from Dark Horse Comics features full frontal female nudity- most likely a publishing first for a mainstream comic publisher in this country. …….People complained and feigned outrage. Ok, there’s actually more to the story. The nude cover art was submitted to the books editor as a joke. The artist knew that it would never get printed… Surprisingly, the nude art was published in the back of Conan #23 to advertise the next issue. The plan was to actually publish a censored version of the picture for the actual book. What was the publisher’s response to the complaints? They ACTUALLY PUBLISHED the nude cover as a limited “variant” edition of the book. Throughout the history of comics artists have pushed the borders of how much skin they can show. It’s been a constante tug of war to see how much they could boost sales before the hammer came down. Consider the Conan cover a test then to see if the public is finally ready to accept full nudity on store shelves. And what is my take on all of this? Who knew that the “bikini wax” dated all the way back to the Hyborian age?

BDSM In Mainstreem Media- CSI: Kinksville- Three times a Lady

“Always listen to your Dominatrix” -William Petersen (who plays Gil Grissom) on Entertainment Tonight The Dominatrix Of CSI, Lady Heather, Made her triumphant return Thursday, 2-8-2005, in the episode “Pirates of the Third Reich.” This is Lady Heather's third appearance on CSI. I wrote about her previous appearance here- http://prodeviant.livejournal.com/1 2190.html If you didn’t watch the show regularly you'd be spending a lot of time scratching your head wondering who the hell this “Lady Heather” chick is and why does everybody walk on eggshells around her. Unlike previous episodes "Lady Heather" gets no introduction and what she does for a living is barely hinted at. Whereas the last time we got a full tour of Lady Heather’s “Dominion”, this time they just never really go there. The ad they ran for the episode alluded to lots of kinky goings. Entertainment Tonight even did a piece featuring kinky footage from the previous “Lady Heather” episodes playing up the BDSM angle.” But all of this, like most of the "torture" in the episode, was just a red herring to get freaks like us to watch. At least CSI is keeping up the current trend of NOT making the BDSM community the violent crime "heavy of the week" I missed the first 5 minutes so I don’t know the setup, but basically Lady Heather's estranged daughter has been murdered and may be the victim of torture. Lady Heather conducts her own independent investigation to find her daughter's killer. She does get her hands on the killer by the end of the episode and shows exactly why you never should mess with someone's children.... especially when they have a "toy" collection. You never see any actual BDSM paraphernalia til the very end, even though the show features -non-BDSM oriented- branding, head-shaving, needle-play and bondage. People with a Medical or Non-consensual/fear play fetish might get some ideas from it but that's about it (and that’s still a bit of a stretch). I wont go into details for those who haven’t seen it yet, but, The ending is probably going to piss off a lot of BDSM community watchdogs. The conclusion is not positive but I don’t really see a "Vanilla" person reacting much differently in the same situation. The result? A Kinkless “Kink” episode of CSI (is it sweeps week already?) On a positive note, the episode does continue to deepen the humanization and quirks of a character that could easily be portrayed as a cardboard BDSM stereotype. It’s amazing, the things you come across when you’re not looking. Recently I’ve come across the kinky anecdotes of various celebs completely by accident. Some of them are years old and, even being the media junkie I am, I’d never heard of them. 10:46 pm - Prodeviant  Going to be on TV?…

Ok, I’m not personally going to be on TV but my leatherworking is! Yesterday I lent a big bag o’ tack to my friend, Ponygirl Cymbra (www.fetishpony.com). Cymbra’s off to L.A. for an appearance on the Tyra Banks show. She flew out yesterday to tape a segment about ponyplay with Bridgett Harrington (www.ropelover.com). Cymbra already had a headstall I made but needed more equipment for a demo they were planning on taping. Plus Bridgett’s own ponygear was floating somewhere in UPS land. So, in short, 2 of the 3 ponies on the show will be wearing ProDeviant ponytack! Just getting the tack to Cymbra wasn’t without drama though. Cymbra lives in a different city than I do. Also, a hunt to track down a existing harness that would fit was fruitless. Although I keep headstalls in stock, the body harnesses are made custom because of the measurements needed. I had 2 produce 2 different sized full body harnesses with tails in less than 24 hours- without measurements! A lot of work goes into these things. It usually takes me about 3 days just to put one together. I got them done just in time to make it to the airport and hand them off before Cymbra flew out. All of this was very last minute so I don’t know when the segment will be airing or what it will entail.  … But I’ll post an update when I find out. Walking thru "Best Buy" yesterday I saw a DVD for a flick called “Love Bytes.” The cover displayed a fetished out Aisa Argento in the center of a collage of similarly attired men and women. A few of the people depicted on the cover were engaged in bdsm of some sort or another. A couple of figures in particular stand out. One was a woman in a collar and corset wearing a black leather studded mask with chains. Another, again wearing a collar, with her arms outstretched and mouth stretched open by a ball gag. So, it looks kinky but the write up on the back doesn’t confirm it. In fact it wasn’t until I looked it up on the Internet Movie Database that I could even ascertain the movie’s genre (vampire). The IMDB lists the movie as “Les Morsures de l'aube”, aka “Love Bites”, from 2001- http://imdb.com/title/tt0235606/ The comments provided a little more info as to plot but no confirmation of the activities of the cover. An Internet search didn’t turn up anything kinky either. BDSM in mainstreem media-TV: blink and you'll miss it- part 3: reality TV- by ProDeviant- copyright 2005 Concluding the recap of 6 random bdsm references found on network TV in 7 days.... Example 5- monday's (6-13-2005) episode of Access Holywood featured a story on r&b artist Jerime Dupre's real life wife doing a cameo in his new video for the song 'Gotta Getcha'. http://www.cmt.com/artists/news/150 3792/06082005/jackson_janet.jhtml Of course the only reason this made the news because Mr Dupre's wife is Janet Jackson and she was prancing around a classroom set in a trashy fetishized schoolgirl outfit . And quite the outfit it was. The traditional pigtails, white shirt, and plaid skirt were complemented by a corset, spike heeled boots and fishnets. The skirt was actually cut shorter in the back to show off her, barely covered by fishnet, ass (the shots were digitally blurred so I couldn’t tell if she was wearing a thong or not.) the footage on Access Hollywood was touted as "excluseive" because, supposedly, in the actual video their would just be a glimpse of Janet to leave the viewer wondering if it was actually her or not. The artist also claims that he never has been to a real peepshow so the scenes in the video are his idea of what a peepshow would be like. Similar to every other example I've come across in the during these 7 days, what Mr Dupre DIDNT say is his vision of a peepshow is populated excluseively by fetish/bdsm stereotypes. When I finally caught the actual video (the censored version, btw. supposedly theirs a even raunchier cut floating around out there) the various peepshow scenes featured; the aforementioned schoolgirl, a pair of blonds in abbreviated cop get-ups, a latex nurse, and a dominatrix working over her female slave. I didn’t see a single scenario that WASNT kinky. DAMN! And I always though peepshows just featured bored strippers. Example 6 So far all the examples I’ve shared are blatant. Watching them you cant miss their bdsm influence. Once you get over to the D/s realm, BDSM can become a very subtle, everyday, affair. Which brings us to Jerry Hall's new reality show "Kept" Jerry Hall, a fashion mode,l is most famous for being the longtime girlfriend of the rolling stones' Mick Jagger. Reportedly she's also very Rich. Rich enough that she's willing pay to train a man to be completely devoted to her and at her every beck and call. Someone who can be the perfect companion for any situation, social or intimate, that comes up. Some one who wants to be her boy-toy, her companion, her servant, her subordinate, her...."Kept" man. ....oh yeah, and she’s going to see to it that this training is as demanding, difficult, and humiliating as commercial TV will tolerate. Such is the premise of Jerry Hall's new reality show "kept", http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/kept/serie s.jhtml , where Several Americans are imported to England to undergo training and tests to determine which is best suited to be her new beau. as is diregur in reality shows, one applicant is dismissed each episode. Here however it's not because they loose a challenge that they have to go home. They depart simply because she decides their unworthy of her. She may keep saying that she's in search of the perfect person to be her "kept" man, but it doesn’t take much of a stretch to see a D/s context in all of this. "Kept" man? it seems more like she's grooming a service-oriented submissive/slave to me. in fact, some of these "lessons" would appear right at home in "the marketplace" books or "Miss Abernathy’s" series of slave training manuals. As the show goes on there continues to be those little touches that illuminate the D/s lifestyle Ms Hall really wants. The way she espouses to the camera all the (submissive) things a "kept" man should be adept at- entertaining her, waiting on her hand and foot, striping naked at her command (or at the command of someone she's put in authority over them). There’s the men undergoing training to teach them how they should talk, how they should move, how they should eat. There’s Jerry's "personal assistant" a blond beauty that's only real responsibility seems to be relaying jerry's commands (and be sexy doing it). There are the contestants themselves, clamoring for the subservient role and describing to the camera how they want to please Jerry. And lording over it all is Jerry Hall herself, regal and commanding; she domineers over all around her and will accept nothing less than perfection in the man that will ultimately be under her. The only thing that the show's missing is the sex training. Of course sex always has been the reality shows most difficult hurdle. It’s more of a "sticky issue" here, where paying a man for sex (and yes, true to reality TV tradition there is a cash payoff for beating out all the other contestants) would smack of prostitution. but I'm sure once it down to the final few and the camera's turned away the final decision will be made, in part, by which one has learned his lessons well enough to sexually satisfy her to perfection. After all, that's really what a "kept" man is for. Full circle- there once was a time when you would sit thru an entire movie waiting for the bdsm scenes the quick glimpses the trailer promised. Often you would be disappointed when the movie you shelled out your hard earned cash on didn’t deliver on that promise. The glimpses you saw in the trailer turned out to be the full extent of bdsm footage in the movie. Now media is loaded with bdsm scenes. However, Its become so integrated, so much a part of everyday life, that what used to be a selling point to get butts into the seats no longer is considered shocking and sensationalistic enough to appeal to viewers looking for kicks Sure were still a highly sought target demographic but we’ve lost our shock value. The bdsm lifestyle still has plenty of funny or compelling moments that will continue be translated into books, film, and TV- but we're no longer the "freek of the week". The recent onslaught of exposure has made what we do just another part of everyday life. We’re fast becoming the equivalent of "soccer moms". Programming is developed specifically for us but we're just not salacious enough to warrant sensationalism anymore.

The scene was featured prominently in the preview that ran in movie theaters. But if you depended only on TV to inform you of a movies kink potential you would have no idea it existed. The ad that ran on TV featured 1 second of Angelina standing in her PVC dress, fishnet fingerless gloves and thigh high stockings with garters.(a shot that I suspect made it in more for the amount of flesh on display rather than it's fetish appeal. It’s interesting to note, however, why the scene works. Keep in mind This is a major film studio release intended for the largest possible audience. For the film to be successful it not only has to be funny and action packed, it also has to speak in a language that the average moviegoer can understand and relate to. The movie's tale of a squabbling married couple on the verge of divorce does this well. Throughout the movie we see scenes that play on the martial issues we're all familiar with. Their funny, or poignant, because over the course of our lives we've all learned what tribulations married people go thru. It’s part of the cultural landscape. Whether or not we’re married ourselves we've been taught to relate. Unlike some of the previous examples I’ve cited above, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie doesn’t explain what a dominatrix is. The dominatrix scene only works because, as of 2005, everybody in America has been educated- via the news, advertising, reality television or popular TV shows, as to what a dominatrix is and what she does. Even if we have never had any personal experience with a dominatrix ourselves, she has become such a part of our cultural language that we walk into the theater pre-educated. Thanks to this pre-education, the scene works simply because the average Joe (or Jane) can relate to it. Example 4- Pam Anderson’s new Fox comedy series "Stacked"- Pamela Anderson has made a cottage industry out of her sex symbol status. Anybody who's watched her previous efforts, V.I.P. and Striperella, can see she's also become just as successful making fun of it. Her new series is no exception. Once again she's cast as an uninhibited sex goddess (with a huge rack). This image was played on heavily in promotions for the show. What wasn’t shown in the adverts was what a KINKY uninhibited sex goddess she was going to portray. A few examples from the most recent (6-15-2005) episode- Pam's character, Skyler, is recounting a sex dream she had that one of Her co-workers was in. When asked about she said- "I was tied, naked, to the hood of his (the co-worker's) car" One of her co-workers also had a sex dream...with Skyler in it. When Skyler finds out she asks what was in it- "Feathers, handcuffs, hot wax...or was it something actually kinky". BDSM in mainstreem media-TV: blink and you'll miss it- part 1 drama

- by ProDeviant- copyright 2005 What’s one of the ways you can tell that BDSM has been successfully integrated into the mainstream? When it becomes such an everyday occurrence media outlets are no longer using it's "freek" factor as a selling point to bring in viewers/customers. During 7 consecutive days in June I randomly came across no less than 6 unadvertised examples of BDSM on different shows and networks- Example 1- in that week’s episode of CSI (June 9th 2005*) BDSM was very prominent. All the suspects in a murder case were affiliated, whether as employees or patrons, of "lady Heather's Dominion". "Lady Heather," played by Mindy Clark, was a Pro Domme who was introduced in the show via a previous episode. During this episode the CSI investigators (and of course, the viewers) were treated to a tour of her house and all the kinky going-on's within. Various sorts of scenes and "scene" personalities were depicted . Lots of BDSM philosophy was espoused. The best part however was the lead investigator "Grisom" becoming romantically involved with Lady Heather. Of course he destroys their budding romance when he, wrongfully, accuses her of murder, but the revelation that the show's straight laced lead character would be attracted to, and would openly enter into a relationship with, a lifestyle BDSM’er and prodomme says loads. At the end of the episode he even drives back to her house to brood silently (the episode fades to black so we'll never know if he’s to meloncolonily drive off - or- go to her door to try and patch things up.) However, from the ad NBC ran you'd never know about the kinky shenanigans. The Spot didn’t feature any of the BDSM footage. The only reason I knew to watch it at all was because I recognized the Mindy Clarke in the commercial, remembered reading about the role she had played on the show previously, and put 2 and 2 together. Example 2- as anybody who watches Fox knows, they're all about generating controversy and noriority to draw in viewers... so if their going to go the S+M route on the SECOND episode of a brand new crime drama series you'd think they'd chum the waters with some tantalilizing teasers.... .... But no. it was by pure chance that I caught the second (6-15-05) episode of "The Inside", http://www.fox.com/theinside/ . I’d never even heard of The show before and just happened to land there while channel surfing. I'm Glad I did as it was one of the kinkiest things I'd seen on TV in a while. And, in a odd parallel to the situation to the CSI episode I Mentioned earlier, one of the most interesting things was the characterization Of the star of the show.... for most of the episode it's hinted at that she's more into BDSM, as a submissive, than she's letting on. Other notable personalities include- The ignorant co-worker, who hates BDSM'ers because a kinky women he had the hots for rejected his advances. The asshole dom who gets his in the end. (Still, you do feel bad for him, he may be a jerk but he’s not an evil jerk) And the head of the department- a dominating sevengalli who's constant manipulation of his underlings and mindgames leads one to believe that he’s also more familiar with BDSM than he's letting on. The episode is also significant in its portrayal of BDSM in general. Originally pegged as the "bad guy of the week", BDSM comes out innocent and a much more twisted persona is the villain. Fyi- this is a practice that has become the norm in modern TV crime drama. (Whoo hoo! were not the bad guys anymore!) HOWEVER- the chorus of their song is “Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was HOT like me. Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was a FREAK like me” so I can’t see it being boring.

Recently various companies have subjected the goth subculture to the toy treatment. Since the goth movement has a lot of bdsm/fetish crossover I thought I'd bring some of the kinkier items to the forefront-

Back in the second installment of this article I reported on Mezco’s “Living Dead Dolls: Fashion Victims". A line that was groundbreaking in its combination of the goth, fetish, and fashion doll genres. Now it's a year later and the second series of fashion victims are on the shelves. While at first look they may not be as outrageous as the first set (the blatant PVC fetish fashions, as well as nipples, are gone and the breasts lost a couple of cup sizes) 2 of the dolls still include a few features of notice.

The fusion of goth and bdsm is obviously not limited to toys. The influences can be seen throughout goth fashion; accessories nick nacks, music, art and books. (BTW- If your interested, "The Goth Bible" by Nancy Kilpatrick devotes quite a bit of text documenting and attempting to explain the crossover of the goth/bdsm subcultures.) Mall stores like Hot Topic and Spencer’s gifts have made this mix of goth/bdsm fashion and products easily accessible to Mainstream America. Trying to document all the products that benefit from this synergy is a bigger job than I would like to take on. So I focus on the toys... which incidentally are also being sold in stores that don’t cater to goths (or bdsm-er's for that matter). I guess I just like the odd juxtaposition of where these products are ending up

This image is from "the Gothic Lolita Bible", a Japanese publication that serves as a guide and catalog for girls who live to dress up like Victorian dolls. Flipping through the magazine I was actually surprised that there seemed to be an absence of bdsm imagery in a goth publication. I have some bad news to report folks.....

Fox TV is blurring out naked cartoon baby butts over the fear that they'll get spanked (again) by the FCC.

Fox says it covered up the naked rear end of a cartoon character recently because of nervousness over what the Federal Communications Commission will find objectionable.

The latest example of TV network self-censorship because of FCC concerns came a few weeks ago during a rerun of a "Family Guy" cartoon. Fox electronically blurred a character's posterior, even though the image was seen five years ago when the episode originally aired.

"We have to be checking and second-guessing ourselves now," Fox entertainment president Gail Berman said Monday."

WHY the paranoia?- the article continues:

"Fox hadn't gotten any complaints about the cartoon. But the move follows the FCC's decision in October to fine 169 Fox stations $7,000 each for airing an episode of "Married By America" that showed people licking whipped cream from strippers' bodies and a man in his underwear being spanked by strippers."

DAMMIT! don't we, as Americans, have a right to watch whip cream licking and stripper spanking OUTSIDE the confines of the Jerry Springer show. Isn't that covered in the Constitution by the doctrine of " Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" or something?

Even PBS (who, FYI,  recently aired a program in the middle of the day that featured nudity ) is running scared and  "will edit out a glimpse of a naked woman in a fictional account of a terrorist 'dirty bomb' attack that will air next month."

I suspect this is why I've had so little to report on the TV front in the last few months. In the wake of "Nipplegate" the FCC has finally gotten the  political muscle to muzzle the networks. They've gone beyond imposing fines for nudity and dirty words. Now they can effectively impose fines for anything.

The networks are scared, and if you enjoy network television you should be too. the most groundbreaking moments of any medium are often those that challenge the status quo. These challenges will almost always be offensive to some segment of the population (and in this world I cant think of anything that doesn't offend somebody.) If this trend is left unchecked network TV could become the equivalent of one long, never ending, Care Bears cartoon.

I see 2 other disturbing aspects of this self-censorship. 1 is it's retro-activity, 2, that it's not an isolated event. Since the superbowl fiasco multiple networks have felt the need to snip out potentially scandalous footage when they repeat a show. Some have gone so far as refusing to rebroadcast the episode or movie in its entirety. IF the FCC is left unchecked there is the possibility of a future where all the BDSM references have been cut out of reruns, effectively robbing our community of this hard earned cultural recognition as well as deleting our place in the historical record.

The good news is Fox is challenging the fine claiming that it is unconstitutional in light of what is allowed on cable programming. I'm hoping they win that appeal.

For now, even if the FCC  has effectively outlawed the act of spanking, at least you can still talk about it. The current TV ad for the Movie "Sideways" has a female bartender saying she needs to be spanked.

Personally I think the FCC should go after  programing I find offensive for a change,...shows like "Barney". That damn dinosaur defiantly needs a spanking!

BDSM in Mainstreem Media: In Stores Now!- Borderline BDSM

Quite often I come across things that appeal to me but I really have to question whether they fall under the guidelines of this column. 2 different toy lines from Mcfarlane toys recently made it to store shelves that bring this to light.

First up is “Clive Barker’s Infernal Parade” a series of figures that takes classical circus characters and re-imagines them as a series of undead performers in a wandering sideshow of the damned. The ringmaster is a voodoo priest; the lion tamer has actually been eaten and can be seen in the stomach of the “lion” and 3 of the other characters exhibit features that put them on that tenuous border of being BDSM and just being twisted.

First up is the “Golem Elijah”

 It features a Man-Beast in a circular cage with various parts of his body being stretched and contorted by flesh hooks. A nice touch is that a small crank on the toys base will actually rotate the cage around and around.

Next is “Bethany Bled: the prisoner in the iron maiden”

Inside a locking, spiked, casket Bethany, a gothic beauty in trashy lingerie, seems more than happy to suffer the pricks of the spikes that press into and penetrate her flesh.

Neither figure illustrates traditional, obvious, elements of bdsm-so why to I think their on the borderline? Unlike other children, who dreamed about what kind of car or house they would own when they grew up, I dreamed of having my very own torture chamber. From my earliest memories I was fascinated with dungeons, shackles, chains, stocks, cages and implements of torture (yep, I was always kinky!) For me (at least) there will always be a correlation between medieval torture equipment and bdsm. And face it- I don’t know many into bdsm who wouldn’t salivate at the prospect of having real, full size versions of these devices in their personal playspaces.

Let’s move on to “Mary Slaughter: the sword swallower”

 A deep-throating performer suspended in a complicated array of hoops and poles; At first glance this figure seems to be much more in place with the bod-mod movement than bdsm (but isn’t a lot of bod- mod a form of masochism to begin with?) she exhibits extensive tattooing, scarification, and flesh hook (well, hoop actually) suspension.

   At second glance there’s the sexual aspect- the character is practically naked. Her “clothing” consisting entirely of pierced nipple shields (at first I thought they were pasties but upon closer examination they exhibit rods thru the nipple holding the discs on, a-la Janet Jackson) and an ornate g-string.  The parallel between “sword swallowing” and a particular sexual act is obvious. Even The story that comes with the toy makes an allusion to the sword being a surrogate penis.

But even a combination of bod-mod and sexual suggestion does not necessarily BDSM Make- maybe we need to move on to the posture collar that forces her chin up at such a extreme angle. Then theirs the ankle cuffs with the spreader bar. The toy’s designer even managed to work in some predicament bondage: (theoretically) as the flesh Mary’s suspended by stretches her body will settle harder onto the metal spikes pressing painfully into her ribs. And that spreader bar between her ankles- it sports a dagger pointing up between her legs and a spiked disk set in between her arched feet- If she tries to move her feet they’ll come in contact with the spikes, preventing her from resting her feet on the ground.  If she tries to bring her legs up (say to grab her calves/ankles with her hands to relieve muscle fatigue) she’ll pierce her own genitals.

It’s strange that even with all these references to bondage restraints and predicaments in the figure it’s lack of overt fetish wear keeps it firmly on the bdsm border in my mind.

Which brings us to the second toy line to make this list.

Recently Mcfarlane toys released a box set that features 3 females in fetish outfits in submissive postures at the feet of 4 men, standing dominantly, in complementary fetish outfits. Despite this description,  I really had to question myself as why this set struck me as kinky.  The personas the figures represent have become as much of the American mainstream culture as Superman and peanuts comics (to which I mean even if you’ve never actively fostered an interest in them yourselves you still know quite a bit about them)

In which the toy manufacturer has replicated one of band’s album covers as action figures.

It took me a while to figure out why this struck my kinky bone. Obviously the submissive women featured in the set drew my eye but it was more than that. It was another aspect of my childhood (and my always being kinky) that I had forgotten.

When Kiss was in their heyday back in the 1970’s  I was too young to appreciate their music. I never heard any of their albums and can only remember ever hearing one of their songs once in the entirety of my childhood. The Kiss phenomenon was quite simply not part of my little kid world. Neverless, I was fascinated with them and bothered my parents repeatedly with requests for Kiss toys.( which, FYI, they never indulged.) so why did I care? What was the attraction? Looking back it seems so obvious. They wore black leather and studs and collars and chains. At that age I didn’t even know what BDSM was yet but I was still attracted to the paraphernalia.

So are these toys actually bdsm related or not? I guess it really depends on your own bdsm experiences. How much of your kink extends into other aspects of your life?

 Did the toy designers have bdsm on the brain when making these toys? Well I can’t speak for the all of them but I’ve seen the original design sketch for Bethany Bled…the original design had her wearing a collar and she was actually tied up into the iron maiden.

I came across this unique verbal juxposition randomly looking over some MSN “news” stories. Sure it sounds weird out of context so here’s a snippet from the story it came from- “The Punisher:”

 While a news search for most of the major vernacular of BDSM came up short there was still one obvious word I hadn’t tried yet. Considering that it was the word that got me started on this whole thread I had to wonder why I didn’t think of trying it first.

The Word “Dominatrix” brought back 195 hits. I found it amusing that about 175 of those were occurrences of the word in reviews of the new movie Catwoman. Apparently not only was I not alone in seeing the BDSM potential of the flick- every film critic in the country picked up on it too!

The rest of the utterances of the word brought to light a rather interesting phenomenon.  The articles were not BDSM related and used the word more like an adjective than a noun. The phrase was used to describe the behavior or look of a personage rather than a actual Dominatrix. Within the last 30 days Reporters used the word to describe some aspect of  Madonna, singer Amy Lee of Evanescence, actress Cloris Leachman, the all female string quartet Bond,  Alice Cooper, Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, Anne Robinson (the host of the Weakest Link game show), Japanese Geishas (???), movie actress Scarlett Johansson, Mexican singer Alejandra Guzman, Nicole Richie (of the reality show The Simple Life), Martha Stewart, the Terminatrix  from Terminator 3, and ultra conservative radio personality Dr. Laura.

Obviously the concept of the dominatrix is in vogue right now. Just Look at the recent slate of movies, TV, and advertising media that has used the image as a selling point. Jumping on the bandwagon, it has also become a favorite among journalists who have adopted the habit of describing ANY strong female presence with the term. (Although the way a few of them use it make be wonder if they understand the actual meaning of the word.)

Growing up I don’t remember the term ever being printed in a newspaper. It wasn’t just me, I recall a conversation with a vanilla girl 8 years ago who had never even heard the word. Today you can go into Party City and buy a “Dominatrix” Halloween costume.

Once a hidden fantasy, the Dominatrix has come out and become part of the ordinary American’s everyday slice of life. If you were to believe the news; any strong, self assured woman practically is one. You can’t get much more mainstream than that.

Now I’m waiting for the day when some patronizing TV reporter or host asks a little girl what she wants to be when she grows up and, instead of veterinarian or ballerina, the girl says with a big toothy smile “I wanna be a Dominatrix!”

Hopefully someone will pick the girl’s parent’s jaws up off the floor.

BDSM in Mainstreem Media: Art- Constrictive Skins

Being an artist I like checking out art exhibits at galleries and museums…umm, well as long as they have lots of nekked skin on display. With This in mind I went to the new exhibit "Skin Tight" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago .

 The exhibition "Skin Tight: the sensibility of the flesh" is supposed to explore the forms fashion takes as our "second skin" to blah, blah, blah.....

 ....if I'm reporting on it here chances are there’s something kinky going on. If you want a recounting of the sociological impact and relevance of this show you're reading the wrong column. I’m just going to relate some of the fetish highlights-

A big theme of the show seems to be latex. The photo display by Marcel van der Vlugt featured 2 photos of a model in a gummi latex hood and body suit in the center of a line of nude photos (the photos are also reproduced on the free program you can take home.) latex is one of the fabric textures visitors are invited to touch  at either end of the display. A latex "wrestler’s mask" adorns one of the display mannequins. Another mannequin is showing off latex fashions. Finally, one of the video displays shows a fashion show where all the models were wearing full face latex hoods and some model full body latex suits as well. Also, the suits have zipper crotches.

 Corsets also made a big showing. A.F. Vandevort presented a entire display (14 peices acording to the program) of differently styled corsets,intermixed with a few other fetishistic garments such as a futuristic nurses outfit, all made out of various materials. Photos/artwork of corsets, clipped from historical sources, also showed up in another artist's work. The last piece I referred to actually seems to be almost completely comprised of photos/artwork depicting different fetishes. (Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of the piece or artist. )

 Foot fetishists are represented by the depiction of 2 different displays of funky leather high heeled footwear by Boudicca and Maison Martin Margiela.

The afore mentioned photo series by Marcel van der Vlught depicts rope head bondage and one of the video presentations by Bernhard Willhelm repeatedly depicts people in ghost costumes abduct, hood, and tie up a group of women.

 My girlfriend’s favorite, however, was the vest fashioned so the backof it resembled a saddle (giddy-up horsey!)

  Yet despite all of this I can’t really recommend this show unless you have a serious interest in the intended subject matter. The fetishistic elements were not displayed in a manner to titillate or inspire controversy. Over all the presentation was rather stuffy and dull.

  However, I do recommend checking out the gift shop. I was pleasantly surprised by the kinky selection of books. Available for purchase were tomes about corsetry, pin-ups, exploitation movie posters (always a good source of S&M imagery) and a large coffee table book of Tom of Finland artwork (If you’re not familiar with Tom of Finland go to

  There was probably more kink to see in the gift shop but I got distracted by the lamp shaped like a baby (it was just weird)

 BDSM in mainstreem media: Toys- The Personification of Lust

 What do you envision when you think of lust? Lovers passionately embracing each other as they caress and maul one another with frantic abandon? Maybe that’s just what comes to my mind.  I feel, however, the creators of the living dead dolls went in a rather surprising direction when they were looking for a physical representation of “lust” for their “7 deadly sins” series of dolls.

 While most of the figures exhibit classical or expected manifestations of  the 7 sins ( “Envy” is bright green, “Gluttony” is a glutton, “Vanity” has had too much plastic surgery)  the “Lust” figure resembles a devilish kewpie doll, red-skinned with horns and tail,  wearing a black PVC; dress, open faced hood, and a flogger in her hand.

 So, it appears that bdsm/fetish has become the personification of lust…at least in the eyes of this particular toy company.

 There’s another recent release of a personage who could be described as having an insatiable lust…bloodlust that is. Normally I wouldn’t classify this item under the bdsm/fetish banner but I’ve seen so many people with a blood/vampire fetish go ga-ga over it.

  Envision a nude woman, relaxing in a claw footed  bathtub, enjoying a glass of wine…replace the water in the tub with blood and you’ll have the new Elizabeth Bathory figure from “Mcfarlane’s Monsters 3: 6 Faces Of Madness” line.

 If you’ve never heard of Ms. Bathory; she was a real person- a Hungarian noblewoman who enjoyed torturing peasant girls for fun and later in life, thinking it would restore her youth, would bathe in their blood.  It’s believed over 600 peasants died to sate her sadistic bloodlust.

 The figure is beautifully sculpted but the accessory it comes with, as well as the actual history of the person the figure represents, is a bit disturbing and not for the timid.

 Wow, first a chapter of one famous sex symbol’s secret past, and how it relates to BDSM, makes national news (Jeri Ryan- as per my previous post) now another’s comes to light…exactly 2 weeks later. And this time there’s little doubt the activity was consensual. (Despite the celeb's current attempts to suppress it.)

 This time the good girl done bad is (Charlie’s) Angel-ic Cameron Diaz. The star  of  Mega-hits like Shreck 2 and There’s Something About Mary had a secret herself that she had been able to keep from the public…untill this week that is!

 In 1992 the, at that time- unknown, star shot a softcore S&M video. This video, now titled “She's No Angel: Cameron Diaz” and the subject of a long legal battle, finally made its premiere on the internet Wednesday.

 I don’t really follow politics but when a scandal embroiled politico who used to be married to an actress that walked around in a skintight bodysuit, with built in corset, my ears perk up.

 The actress in question is Jerry Ryan who played the half-Borg “7 of 9” on Star Trek. (Supposedly, early in her tenure on the show the outfit constricted her waist so severely that she would pass out) she also portrayed a vampire seductress in Dracula 2000 for those who fetishize the combination of blood and biting.

 The politico in question is her ex-husband Jack Ryan, a Republican U.S. Senatorial candidate.

 Apparently the following info came to light when a judge ordered sealed details of the couple’s divorce proceedings opened to the public-

“Jeri Lynn Ryan charged during a custody hearing that Ryan took her on surprise trips to New Orleans , New York and Paris in 1998, and that he insisted she go to sex clubs with him on each trip.

 BDSM in Mainstreem Media: Print- the Peculiar Phenomena of Petgirls

  The cover story on the current issue (# 85) of the  British magazine "Bizarre"  is about the phenomena of "petgirl's", women who (supposedly) choose to live out their lives being treated like animals.  

For those unfamiliar with the magazine, it's a British import that sensationalizes anything  it's editors deem "bizarre" in the world and brings it to it's readers in glorious, often disturbing, full color photos.....It also likes report on lots of porn stars. (Strangely, despite the copious nudity and objectionable material, it is NOT in the adults only section.)  

Perhaps of more interest to us is the magazine's focus on spotlighting a different fetish every month. For instance the end of this month’s petgirl article promises that next month there will be a feature on forniphilia, the bdsm activity/fetish of turning humans into furniture.

To those who might want to go take a look for them selves I do offer this warning- the magazine puts just as much effort, possibly more, into publishing disturbing photos of human oddities, atrocity's, and carnage, as it does erotica. It’s not for people with weak stomachs.

I saw it for sale at Tower Records and I know many stores with extensive newsstands or magazine sections carry it as well. Oh, and just to make things more confusing there's an American fetish magazine that goes under the same name.

BDSM in Mainstreem Media: MTV-A roaring rampage of celebrity self-promotion

 This week the various news agencies made a big deal about the hi-jinks on this years  Movie Awards on MTV...  

...They some how managed to completely miss the kink highlights.  Recounted below for your consideration-

 Quotes:

·                                 Lindsey Lohan in a dog collar (complete with heart shaped i.d. tag) from Freaky Friday.

·                                 Erotic wrestling (complete with body slam) from Bruce Almighty. 

·                                  Kera Knightly proclaiming- "You like pain? Try wearing a corset!" from Pirates of the Caribbean   

·                                  Also from Pirates of the Caribbean- Johnny Depp telling the audience how he deserves to get smacked (repeatedly) by women. (Maybe it just seemed kinkier, and Johnny a bit more masochistic, the way they edited all the slaps together)

Overall, out of the 32 films nominated this year, 8 had some example of leather, latex, or kink displayed on the awards show. Thats 25%!  And I know of at least another 5 nominees that have scenes that would fall under the bdsm banner.

  With that many of 2003's most popular movies geared to appeal to the bdsm/fetish community do get the feeling Hollywood 's recognized us as a not only a profitable but desirable demographic?

  next year I think we should get the red carpet.
